During the Opening Hours of the exhibition The Village Cry at Kunsthalle Basel, cashiers at the front desk and supervisory staff are instructed to wear the perfume Opium by Yves Saint Laurent. The perfume was announced in 1977 and immediately became a top seller.
The exhibition is a Hommage to the early transdisciplinary Magazine «The Village Cry», compiled and published by Beat Presser and Rolf Paltzer in Basel, and is referring to a certain Lifestyle in the early seventies/late eighties of the last century.
To bring Opium into the exhibition-spaces, is to revive in a subtle way a typical scent of that decade. Simultaneously it brings in focus the deceptively discreet appearance of the staff members and makes them to a vital part of the exhibition.
